A to Z Challenge: Under the Upside Down Cake

Under the Upside Down Cake

Mama Lou stepped over to the tray of tea and cake and started slicing the upside down cake. Kieran, Delilah and Izzy continued to throw accusations back and forth, verbal darts aimed and tossed, none hitting the mark. She forced a styrofoam plate into Izzy’s hands and said, “This is getting us nowhere.”

She handed a plate to Delilah. “Fighting among yourselves will not solve this mystery.” Mama Lou picked up the next plate and held it out for Kieran. When he opened his mouth to argue, she scooped up a bite with the fork and forced it into his mouth. “We get it,” she said, as the young deacon spluttered around the moist confection. “He did some despicable things. Let’s move on.”

“He was a bastard.”

The speaker’s voice was world-weary and sad, bitter and strong at the same time. Charlotte Griffin stood in the doorway, her face ravaged with pain. Her eyes were bruised and swollen by smeared makeup and tears, her mouth straight in a rictus of grief. She crossed over to Delilah and then pulled the younger woman into her arms. “I’m so sorry,” she whispered. “I didn’t know. I’m so sorry.”

Charlotte pulled back, kissed Delilah’s cheek before turning back to the group. “Delilah didn’t kill anyone. I was prepared to do it, however, but someone else saved me the trouble.”

“Charlotte,” said Mama Lou. “Whatever are you talking about?”

“It was him, Mama Lou,” Charlotte said, her voice wobbling. “He leaked the video. He told me he no longer wanted to be married to a ‘porn queen’.  But he knew before we got married. I was totally honest with him about my past. I thought I’d found heaven when I met Eddie Griffin but it turns out, it was just the devil.”

“Did you kill him, Charlotte?”

“I wanted to,” said Charlotte, as she pulled a gun from the waistband of her shorts. There was a collective gasp in the room and each of them took a step back. Mama Lou took a step forward. Charlotte said, “I spent the last hour thinking about how I would do it. I prayed and cried and begged God to show me another way and then I remembered this.” Charlotte glanced down at the gun and turned it over in her hands. “He always kept this in the glove compartment in his car. The car was even unlocked. It seemed the sign I was looking for. I was going to do it, Mama Lou. Eddie had taken away everything, even my faith. I had nothing else to lose.”

A heavy tread of footsteps stopped in the doorway. Deacon Hanson Perry scanned the room until his eyes landed on Charlotte and then the gun in her hands. “Charlotte,” he said gently, pulling the weapon from her hands. “Not like this.”

Charlotte’s hands dropped to her side. “I was heading back to the tent when I heard you scream. I knew right then that he pastor was dead.” She shook her head, her eyes sharpening with rage. “I only wish that I could kill the bastard again.”

  1. He was such a bastard! I would’ve wanted Charlotte or even Delilah to have the satisfaction of killing him after everything he’d done to them, but I wouldn’t want them to go to jail, not for his disgusting ass. Hmm, so who’s next on the suspect list? Deacon Perry, perhaps?

C'mon! I know you got something to say . . .
